Position Description

 

Educators for Quality Alternatives operates public alternative schools in New Orleans serving students who have dropped out, been expelled, or otherwise have struggled academically or behaviorally in traditional school settings. EQA runs three high schools: The NET: Central City, The NET: Gentilly, and The NET:East.  EQA also runs a therapeutic middle school program, The Bridge, and a childcare center for students’ infants and toddlers, The NEST.  

 

EQA programs are designed on the understanding that alternative schools should not “punish” or “fix” young people; instead they should be vibrant, flexible, and restorative environments that support students in being their best selves. 

 

Position Summary:

This position will provide day to day management of the Next Steps program that is funded by the Economic Mobility Grant awarded to EQA.  This is a temporary, year-long, grant-funded position.  The Next Steps Coordinator will recruit and onboard fifty-five 2024 EQA graduates who will participate in the program and receive $500 monthly stipends for nine months.  The program will include financial literacy and life skills classes, along with individual coaching.  The goals for participants will be employment and/or postsecondary school, along with building a coherent career plan that provides for economic mobility.

 

EQA’s Next Steps Coordinator is responsible for:

  • Recruit and onboard program participants
  • Manage monthly stipends
  • Maintain regular contact with all participants
  • Provide 1:1 coaching and support
  • Develop and lead monthly classes and activities
  • Source positions and higher education programs and support students to access them
  • Collect and analyze program data to track economic mobility of participants
  • Research and develop long-term options for continuing the program after this grant expires
 

  

Position Requirements:

  • BA degree or higher
  • 5-10 years working with at-risk youth
  • 5-10 years experience designing and managing programs
  • Experience with career counseling/advising
  • Experience with program resource development
  • Experience leading classes and group activities
  • Specialized interest and skills in working with students with learning and emotional difficulties
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, relationship building & management skills
  • Learning mindset dedicated to effectively and innovatively problem solving and constantly improving
  • Consciousness of own identities and privileges and promotes cultural responsiveness in self and others
  • Careful, detail-oriented data management and analysis skills
  • Passion for improving educational opportunities for urban students and for being a part of a strong, mission-driven team
  • Commitment to EQA’s mission, vision and growth
 

Details:

  • Start Date: April/May 2024
  • Location: Position is based at New Orleans East Opportunity Center using flexible office space.  Coordinator needs to have vehicle transportation for easy mobility to all three EQA campuses and community partners.
  • Schedule: School is year-round with a generous leave schedule.
  • Salary: Salary is $50,000-$55,000 based on years of experience and degrees. Temporary grant-funded position for 12 months only. Based on performance, individuals may be eligible for other positions in the organization post grant period.
